Is Hawaiian Sandalwood sustainable?
It's true - in the last 10-20 years, Hawaiian Sandalwood, 'iliahi, was becoming very rare and endangered. It was basically clear cut and sent overseas. However, in the past several years, there has been a major push for reforestation of this amazing wood. The farm Wildcare from which the wood is sources works directly with the University of Hawaii and a few other agencies on the Big Island (land management & so forth); together they have planted 1000s of trees in recent years, along with the other vegetation that is required for the 'iliahi to grow. The farm is committed to only harvesting off the dead & dying trees that have naturally fallen and aged for 3-5 years, making sure it is a 100% sustainable process. By purchasing from this source, Wildcare is supporting the farm directly, which in turn is allowing them to continue their reforestation efforts. Please keep in mind, Wildcare only offers this magical Hydrosol on a limited basis, in small batches at a time.
What is a hydrosol?
Hydrosols, also known as Distillates, are the subtle aromatic waters resulting from slowly steamed plant material. Lovingly made using hand collected local spring water, and combined with ethically wildcrafted organically grown plant material, they are distilled through a copper Alembic.
Alchemists from all over the world have performed transformational distillations in these traditional alembics for over 2000 years. The actual process of performing the distillation has a 3-5 hour duration, a much slower process compared to more commercialized modes of skin care production. What results is nutrient-rich water containing the plant's suspended particles of essential oils and plant acids. Each hydrosol offers its own unique healing properties dependant on the plant distilled.
Hydrosols are incredibly gentle and well-suited for beings of all ages and sensitivities (including babies and pets). Wildcare Hydrosols are recommended as a daily facial toner, but can also be used as a hair/scalp tonic, energetic refreshment, added to baths and used in conjunction with clay masks.
Mist your Hydrosol onto clean face or hands until saturated, and pat for ample hydration. For added moisture morning and night, follow by gently massaging a facial oil into the skin, and finish with another mist of your Hydrosol to lock in moisture. Your daily consistent use restores the skin’s natural PH balance.
Store your Hydrosol in the refrigerator for extra-cooling skin relief.
Keep in a cool, dark place, always out of direct sunlight, using within 1 year.
